Tell us more about Barre Living and why you have focused on neutrals?

Barre Living is a homewares business that my cousin Carla and I started because we wanted to create pieces that make your home feel cosy, stylish, and add unique pieces to every space. We’ve always been drawn to neutral tones because they just create such a calm vibe, but we also love adding texture. That’s where rattan comes in, it’s such a beautiful, natural material that adds warmth and character to any space. From decor pendants to cushion covers, we mix rattan with soft neutrals to create pieces that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Do you have a favourite space or ritual in your home where you enjoy unwinding with tea?

Yes, I have a little spot in my home where I love to unwind with tea, especially before bed. It’s a cosy little corner of my living space with a comfortable chair by the window. It’s my time to slow down, clear my mind, and enjoy a quiet moment before bed especially in winter.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to design a home but are feeling overwhelmed on where to start.

Take it one step at a time. Start with the layout and think about how you want to use each space. Don’t be afraid to ask for advice or get a second opinion. Most importantly, be patient, designing your home is a process, and it’s okay to take your time. 5 years later and we are still designing and completing spaces in our home.

Can you share what the four-year journey of trying to conceive was like for you emotionally and physically?

The four-year journey of trying to conceive was honestly emotionally and physically exhausting. In the beginning, I was hopeful, excited, and optimistic, but over time, the constant ups and downs took a toll. Emotionally, it felt like a rollercoaster, there were moments of excitement when things seemed to be progressing, followed by crushing disappointment when it didn’t work out. The uncertainty was the hardest part; not knowing what the next step would be or if it would even be the right one.

Physically, IVF was challenging as well. The medications, appointments, and procedures took a lot out of me. The hormone treatments left me feeling out of balance, and each cycle brought its own physical challenges. There were days when it felt like my body wasn’t cooperating, and that added another layer of frustration and sadness. It wasn’t just the process, but the waiting and the toll it took on my mental health, too. But through it all, I had to remind myself to keep going and trust the process, even when it felt like nothing was happening. It was tough, but it was a journey that ultimately led me to where I am today, 30 weeks pregnant with our baby girl.

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced during your IVF journey?

One of the biggest challenges during my IVF journey was the emotional rollercoaster. There were so many ups and downs, hopeful moments followed by disappointments, and it was hard not to get discouraged. Another challenge was finding the right specialist who truly listened to me and understood my concerns. It took me four years and five different doctors to find the one who was a good fit. On top of that, the physical toll of the treatments was draining. The constant appointments, medications, and the feeling of being out of control sometimes made it feel like an endless battle. But despite all the hardships, I kept pushing forward, knowing that it was all part of the journey.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone embarking on their own IVF journey, what would it be?

Always advocate for yourself! Looking back, I really wish I had done it more during my 4-year IVF journey. It took me four long years and consulting with five different specialists before I finally found the one who truly listened and validated my concerns. IVF is a deeply personal and challenging process, and it's so important to have a doctor who not only listens but also understands your experience. Don't settle—make sure your voice is heard and your needs are taken seriously. Sometimes, finding the right person who truly listens is all it takes.

Tea often symbolises connection and reflection, do you have any favourite memories or rituals involving tea that hold a special meaning?

It’s not a ritual, but every time I have English breakfast tea, I can’t help but think of my Nonna. When we were little, barely six years old, she would make us tea in small mugs, always with a piece of toast with butter. All of us grandkids would sit together on the couch, dip our toast into the warm tea, and watch ABC Kids. Those moments are so vivid in my memory, and now every cup of tea takes me back to those simple times.
